Columbia Threadneedle

Columbia Threadneedle Parent Rating

Average

Columbia Threadneedle has some bright spots but retains an Average Parent rating in the wake of recent departures.

Wholly owned by Ameriprise Financial AMP, Columbia Threadneedle has created ample support. With more than USD 650 billion in assets under management as of March 2026, it employs more than 550 investment professionals across the globe, including a centralized industry-based research team, which can sufficiently support its wide-ranging lineup. Its separate “5P” team works as an in-house consulting group that helps its portfolio managers monitor various factors and has generally helped strategies stay in their own stated lanes.

While the firm can thus boast some positives—which also include its Seligman equity team and its Minnesota-based fixed-income group—superior performance hasn’t manifested widely. Many analyst-rated strategies receive Average People ratings, and fees overall tend to be in line with industry averages.

Recent departures reflect some deficiency in succession planning and talent retention. In June 2026, global CIO William Davies, after 33 years at the firm, retired without public warning. CEO Ted Truscott has taken up that role in an interim capacity. Although keeping Truscott in the role while the firm searches for a replacement indicates Columbia Threadneedle is being patient and thoughtful, it’s unusual in an industry that emphasizes the importance of investment talent and succession. Davies’ departure comes 15 months after Columbia Threadneedle’s global head of equities, Melda Mergen, abruptly left the firm after more than 25 years. There have been other departures as well, particularly from the equity team.

Note: This share class' Parent Pillar rating is analyst-driven, as its Branding Name, Columbia Threadneedle (Branding Name ID: BN000008GG), is covered by Morningstar Manager Research.
