DF Dent demonstrates a long-term mindset when it comes to investing, talent development, and client relationships. It keeps an Above Average Parent rating.
Over the past few years, DF Dent has navigated a gradual transition of leadership from founder Dan Dent to his son Matt, who is well-suited to pilot the firm for the future. Matt Dent focuses primarily on the investing side of the business and leans on firm veterans Mike Morrill and Brooke Hrimnak to steer client services and operations, respectively.
The Baltimore-based group has stayed true to its origins as concentrated, quality-growth equity investors, with three core strategies that span the market-cap spectrum. This high-conviction, low-turnover approach can suffer periods of underperformance, but it is supported by a small but stable investment team, as well as a loyal client base. DF Dent is patient and committed to putting client needs ahead of business growth, and assets under management have grown slowly to about USD 10 billion as of March 2025. Fees are also reasonable compared with those of peers.
As Dan Dent hands daily control of the firm to Matt, he has also continued to sell down his stake in the firm. Although control remains solidly in the Dents' hands, more employees have joined the ranks of owners, expanding their share to about a fourth of the total and encouraging retention.
