Marathon Petroleum's first-quarter results surpassed market expectations. Despite a heavy turnaround schedule and weaker margins, refining performed well, evidenced by a 104% capture rate. Midstream performance added earnings stability and ensured payouts of $1.3 billion during the quarter.
