MetLife Earnings: Headwinds From Tougher Lending Conditions, Lower Variable Investment Income

MetLife reported disappointing second-quarter numbers, as adjusted earnings came in at $1.36 billion or $2.02 per share, down 11% from a year ago. Adjusted ROE was 14.6%, below the life insurer's medium target of 15%-17%. Shares went down around 5%-6% in the after-hours trading.
