With Its Asset Cap Debacle Behind It, Wells Fargo Looks Ahead to a Brighter Future

Business Strategy and Outlook

Wells Fargo remains in the middle of a multiyear rebuild. The bank finally received positive news on the regulatory front as its asset cap was lifted in June 2025. The bank still has years of expense-saving projects ahead of it as it attempts to get its efficiency ratio back under 60%. Management plans to take several years to improve and invest in the bank's current businesses. This includes increasing its share of the middle-market investment banking market, investing more resources behind its credit card services, and revitalizing its wealth management division, which has experienced consistent declines in advisor headcount. These tasks take on increased importance for a bank that has been playing defense for years after its fake accounts scandal broke in late 2016.
