Without an Edge, Shake Shack’s Unit Economics Could Succumb to Intense Competitive Pressure

Business Strategy and Outlook

We posit Shake Shack’s lackluster scale and fragile brand cachet leave it’s long-term prospects vulnerable against a competitive restaurant landscape. In this vein, we’re skeptical the firm can carry its premium banner beyond its urban regional footprint while driving the throughput and post-trial frequency that we think are required to maintain compelling unit-level economics over the long haul. Ultimately, we see a tougher competitive backdrop ahead, with emerging concepts, regional leaders, and national incumbents attacking both ends of the value spectrum with elevated menu innovation and aggressive value offerings. In turn, this should make the duel for dining occasions increasingly difficult. This has been reflected in comparable sales growth of 2% over the last decade, a far cry from our 4% inflation estimate. And we don’t expect much acceleration, with our forecast calling for comparable sales to average just 2.1% growth over the next decade.
