Company Report

2026 is turning out to be another heavy investment year for MercadoLibre, as the company continues to expand its Mercado Envios and Mercado Pago platforms. In our view, this is the correct approach for the firm, as these are key distinguishing features of the company relative to its e-commerce competitors and major drivers of its dominant position in Latin America. Their success also pushes the rising adoption of e-commerce and digital payments in the region, expanding MercadoLibre’s total addressable market.

Company Report

MercadoLibre has positioned itself as a one-stop solution for Latin American commerce, and has recently pushed to provide the same breadth of service in financial technology products. In fact, the company has developed a comprehensive ecosystem of mutually reinforcing services, with a core marketplace supported by a payments and lending arm, a best-in-breed shipping solution, and an increasingly robust advertising platform. With effectively all the firm's platform gross merchandise volume funneled through proprietary payment rails and shipped through its own Mercado Envios service, the marketplace operator has effectively addressed two of the biggest pain points in e-commerce.

Stock Analyst Note

Driven by unexpected operating leverage over administrative costs, MercadoLibre posted a blowout quarter of profitability, with $12.61 in diluted EPS topping FactSet consensus estimates by 60%—and more than doubling our $5.74 estimate, which reflected an expectation for outsize credit card growth and commensurate provisioning for expected credit losses. While the market reaction was overwhelmingly positive, we adopt a more measured view, with currency headwinds representing a potent drag that's likely to persist into 2025. Further, we saw nothing in the results that suggests that a revision to our long-term assumptions for high-teens operating margins is warranted. As we balance a very strong quarter, currency headwinds, and time value, we plan to raise our $1,750 fair value estimate by a mid-single-digit percentage.
