UniCredit Increases Stake in Greece's Alpha Bank

By Mauro Orru

UniCredit is raising its stake in Greek lender Alpha Bank, doubling down on a partnership that it said benefited clients and shareholders alike.

The Italian bank said it had entered into additional financial instruments for a roughly 5% stake in Alpha Bank, lifting its total shareholding to about 26%.

"Our investment in Alpha has delivered well beyond expectations and continues to be a key area for growth within our business," UniCredit Chief Executive Andrea Orcel said.

UniCredit didn't disclose how much it is paying for the stake, but said its shareholding should bring in around 244 million euros ($284 million) in net profit next year, citing analysts' forecasts.

The lender said increasing its stake in Alpha Bank would knock about 65 basis points off UniCredit's CET1 ratio--a key measure of capital strength.
