Woolworths Faces Hit of Up to A$530 Million Over Staff Underpayment

By Stuart Condie

SYDNEY--Australian supermarket giant Woolworths said it could face an additional hit of up to 530 million Australian dollars, or US$347.5 million, following its failure to properly pay its staff.

Woolworths on Monday said its very preliminary assessment of an Australian court ruling was that it could be liable for between A$180 million and A$330 million in post-tax remediation to underpaid staff.

Interest, superannuation and payroll tax could add another A$140 million-A$200 million to the tally, it said.

Woolworths's estimate includes further remediation related to historical underpayments from 2013 to 2019, and the impact of the court ruling related to issues from 2019 to 2025.

The ASX-listed company said it would update the market no later than February, when it is due to report its fiscal first-half results.
