BHP Cuts 750 Jobs, Suspends Low-Margin Australian Coal Operations

By Rhiannon Hoyle

Miner BHP Group will cut roughly 750 jobs and suspend low-margin operations at coal mines it runs in Australia with Japan's Mitsubishi Corp.

BHP, the world's largest miner by market value, said Wednesday it will suspend its Saraji South mine from November, and also conduct a strategic review of the BHP FutureFit Academy in Mackay in Australia's Queensland state.

"Due to the unsustainable impact of the Queensland Government's coal royalties on business returns, BHP Mitsubishi Alliance is removing approximately 750 roles across Queensland and suspending low-margin operations," BHP said in an emailed statement.
