Samsung Group to Add 60,000 Staff to Work on AI, Chips, Biotech

By Jihye Lee

Samsung Group plans to hire 60,000 people over the next five years to work on its semiconductor, biotechnology and artificial-intelligence businesses.

The South Korean conglomerate said it will add 12,000 workers a year, in a bid to "be at the forefront of fostering new businesses and creating jobs for the youth," it said in a statement Thursday.

The move by the group comes as the administration of South Korea's newly appointed president, Lee Jae-myung, faces pressure to tackle youth unemployment, a key issue in a country dealing with an aging population and a low birthrate.

Shares of Samsung Electronics were last up 2.2% at 79,900 won. Affiliate Samsung C&T was last up 1.9% and Samsung Biologics was 0.5% higher.
