Credit Bureau Shares Slide After FICO Launches Direct Licensing of Mortgage Scores

By Nicholas G. Miller

Shares of credit bureaus fell Thursday, a day after Fair Isaac said it would allow mortgage lenders to access FICO scores directly, bypassing credit bureau companies.

Equifax fell 8.7% to $231.59 a share, TransUnion sank 12% to $72.39 and Experian slid 4.7% to $47.22. Meanwhile, Fair Isaac shares rose nearly 24% to $1,870.89 in midday trading.

FICO said the change would create price transparency and cost savings for mortgage lenders and brokers.

FICO said it would offer two pricing models under the new system. One would charge a royalty fee of $4.95 per FICO score and a loan fee of $33 per borrower, per score when a loan is closed. Alternatively, lenders can pay a $10 per-score fee, which is the average price previously charged by credit bureaus.
