James Hardie Shares Gain on Improved Outlook, Preliminary 2Q Earnings

By Connor Hart

Shares of James Hardie Industries climbed after its preliminary second-quarter results exceeded company expectations, boosted by a recovering industry outlook.

The stock rose 9.7% to $22.04 in premarket trading Tuesday. Through Monday's close, the stock has lost more than one-third of its value so far this year.

The provider of exterior home and outdoor living solutions said it expects to report sales of $1.29 billion to $1.3 billion for its quarter ended Sept. 30. Analysts polled by FactSet expected sales of $1.2 billion.

Adjusted earnings, which strip out one-time items, are projected at 26 cents to 27 cents a share. Wall Street had modeled adjusted earnings of 17 cents.

"Our Siding & Trim sales performance exceeded the expectations reflected in our modeling considerations," Chief Executive Aaron Erter said. He added that dealers and distributors reduced inventory less than the company had anticipated, and that the industry's outlook has modestly improved.

As a result, James Hardie plans to update its full-year guidance when it hosts its second-quarter earnings call next month, Erter said.
