Crypto Platform Gemini Exploring Opportunities in Southeast Asia

By Amanda Lee

Gemini, the cryptocurrency platform launched by the Winklevoss twins, is looking at expanding in Southeast Asia, a top executive said.

"I can't share any specific details...but we are actively exploring opportunities in other Southeast Asian countries," Saad Ahmed, head of Asia-Pacific at Gemini, said in a recent interview.

Gemini, founded by billionaires Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in 2014, just set up shop in Australia, opening an office in Sydney.

It is one of a growing list of companies eyeing Asia's growing crypto scene as bitcoin's rally fuels appetite for digital assets. Institutional interest in stablecoins and a more supportive regulatory backdrop are added tailwinds.

Crypto adoption is booming in Asia-Pacific, which blockchain data platform Chainalysis ranks as the fastest-growing region for on-chain crypto activity in the 12 months ended June. Total crypto transaction volume grew to $2.36 trillion as of June, from $1.4 trillion a year ago, said Chainalysis.

While Gemini's Saad declined to give specifics on investment, he said the company has ramped up its presence across the region.

Gemini has around 65 employees in its Singapore headquarters, up from 15 in the fourth quarter of 2023, he said.

"We see Singapore as a hub not just for Asia but for the world," he said.

Gemini plans to build a team in Australia too, he added, aiming to have a couple of employees in the country by year's end "and then grow from there."
