BASF Sales, Profit Fall on Adverse Currency Effects, Lower Prices

By Billy Gray

BASF posted lower third-quarter sales and profit due in part to adverse currency effects and lower prices.

The German chemical giant said on Wednesday that third-quarter net profit was 172 million euros, equivalent to $200.4 million, compared with 287 million euros for the prior-year period. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization before special items--one of its preferred metrics--was 1.54 billion euros, compared with 1.62 billion euros.

"Customer buying behavior in almost all industries and regions remained cautious," said Markus Kamieth, chairman of the board of executive directors.

Sales were 15.23 billion euros , compared with 15.74 billion euros for the same period in the previous year.

Analysts had forecast 15.19 billion euros in sales, 184 million euros in net profit and pre-special item Ebitda of 1.5 billion euros, according to consensus estimates provided by the company.

BASF adjusted its expected full-year Ebitda before special items guidance, saying it now expects it to be between 6.7 billion euros and 7.1 billion euros, compared with its previous forecast of pre-special item Ebitda of between 7.3 billion euros and 7.7 billion euros in 2025.

The adjustment is a technical one, reflecting the discontinued coatings business, the company said.
