By Elena Vardon
Deutsche Bank reported a fourth-quarter profit ahead of expectations on lighter costs and the sustained performance of its investment bank.
The German lender on Thursday posted an aftertax profit for the quarter of 1.57 billion euros ($1.88 billion), compared with 337 million euros for the same period the previous year, when the result was hit by litigation and restructuring charges. Analysts had estimated a 1.35 billion-euro result, according to a company-compiled consensus.
Growth from by its investment bank--its key revenue engine--and its asset-management arm along with better costs helped it grow its bottom line.
Revenue climbed 7% to 7.73 billion euros, beating the 7.635 billion-euro result penciled in by analysts. Noninterest expenses fell 15% while provisions for credit losses were 6% lower than a year prior.
The bank's return on average tangible shareholders' equity--a closely watched profitability metric--was 8.7% in the quarter and 10.3% in the year, in line with its annual guidance.
The group added that it plans to distribute a 1.0 euro per share dividend and that it has gotten authorization to buy back 1.0 billion euros of its own shares.
