Boston Scientific Plunges on Disappointing 1Q Outlook Despite 4Q Earnings Beat

Shares of Boston Scientific fell after the company issued disappointing first-quarter guidance despite growing its profit in the fourth quarter.

The stock dropped 17% to $75.91 in Wednesday morning trading, on pace for the largest percent decrease in more than 25 years. Shares have lost 27% of their value in the past year.

The medical devices company guided for first-quarter organic net sales growth between 8.5% and 10% and is forecasting adjusted earnings of between 78 cents and 80 cents a share.

Wall Street was expecting organic net sales growth of 9.8% and first-quarter adjusted earnings of 80 cents a share during the first quarter, according to FactSet.

Boston Scientific gave a more optimistic outlook for the full year, projecting organic net sales growth between 10% and 11% and adjusted earnings of between $3.43 and $3.49 a share. Analysts were expecting organic growth of 10.5% and adjusted earnings of $3.47 a share.

The company reported a fourth-quarter profit of $672 million, or 45 cents a share, up from a profit of $566 million, or 38 cents a share, a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, the company recorded earnings of 80 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected 78 cents a share.

Net sales rose to $5.29 billion, up from $4.56 billion a year prior and ahead of analysts' expectation of $5.28 billion, according to FactSet.
