Barclays Lifts Income Guidance for This Year, Sets out New Targets Through 2028

Barclays nudged up its income guidance for the year and issued new targets for the period through 2028.

The British bank on Tuesday said it now forecasts income of around 31 billion pounds ($42.46 billion) for 2026, up from 30 billion pounds previously, after reporting income of 29.1 billion pounds for 2025. For the period through 2028, it is guiding for income growth of more than 5% each year.

The group confirmed that it expects a return on tangible equity--a key profitability measure--of more than 12% this year, up from 11.3% last year, and a return greater than 14% in 2028.

Barclays also penciled in a cost-to-income ratio in the high 50s, which it sees improving to the low 50s in three years' time.

"Our aim is to secure sustainably higher returns through to 2028 and beyond," Chief Executive Officer C. S. Venkatakrishnan said. The bank said it would distribute more than 15 billion pounds in capital to shareholders over the period.

The lender updated its guidance as it published better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and outlined a 1 billion-pound share buyback program.
