Arvinas, Pfizer Get FDA Approval for Breast Cancer Treatment
By Elias Schisgall
Arvinas and Pfizer received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for Veppanu, the companies' jointly developed advanced breast cancer treatment.
Arvinas said Friday the FDA approved the drug, known generically as vepdegestrant, to treat adults with certain forms of advanced metastatic breast cancer whose disease worsened following at least one line of endocrine therapy.
The approval came ahead of schedule. The FDA had previously targeted a decision by June 5, Arvinas said.
"This milestone demonstrates that targeted protein degradation can translate into meaningful clinical impact," Chief Executive Randy Teel said. "It also strengthens our confidence in the breadth and versatility of our exciting clinical pipeline across oncology, neurodegenerative, and neuromuscular diseases."
The company and Pfizer remain on track to select and announce a third party to bring the treatment option to patients, he said.
Shares of Arvinas were up 3.7% to $10.27. The stock is down 13% this year.
The company said the approval was the FDA's first green light for a Proteolysis Targeting Chimera, or PROTAC, a form of heterobifunctional protein degrader therapy.
