Applied Materials Expands Singapore Manufacturing Operations With $500 Million New Facility
By Megan Cheah
SINGAPORE--Applied Materials is expanding its manufacturing and research-and-development operations in Singapore as it seeks to support demand for artificial-intelligence chips.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor-equipment maker said it has invested about $500 million in a new Singapore facility that more than doubles its advanced cleanroom capacity in the city-state.
The facility is already operating at volume production and aims to serve chip makers that are expanding production to meet rising AI-driven demand, Applied Materials said Wednesday. The Nasdaq-listed company expects to add roughly 1,000 new jobs over the next few years with its Singapore expansion.
Applied Materials has a global manufacturing footprint, with facilities in the U.S., Europe, Israel and Taiwan. The company said it has invested more than $400 million in its U.S. equipment manufacturing infrastructure over the past five years, and nearly doubled its global manufacturing capacity.
Its new center in Silicon Valley is set to become operational this year, with capital spending set to scale to around $5 billion as customer projects commence, it said.
