Caterpillar Posts Higher 2Q Profit, Sales on Increased Orders

By Connor Hart

Caterpillar notched higher profit in the latest quarter as sales jumped, driven by continued demand for its construction equipment, as well as its engines and generators.

Shares rose 9.3%, to $907.10, in premarket trading.

The company--known for its giant yellow dump trucks, bulldozers and other equipment--reported a second-quarter profit of $3.59 billion, or $7.77 a share, compared with $2.18 billion, or $4.62 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, earnings were $8.17 a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $6.22 a share.

Total sales and revenue increased 24% to $20.54 billion, topping Wall Street models for $19.34 billion. The company attributed the gain to higher sales volume and favorable price realization.

"This is the first time in company history that we have generated over $20 billion in sales and revenues in a single quarter," Chief Executive Joe Creed said. "Strong order rates and a growing backlog reflect broadening momentum across all three of our primary segments."

Sales across Caterpillar's power-and-energy division climbed 17% to $8.24 billion. The division has grown quickly, primarily driven by sales of large power-generation sets and turbines that are powering data-center projects amid the artificial-intelligence boom.

The equipment maker's construction-industries unit logged sales of $8.35 billion, up 35% from last year. Its resource-industries division posted sales of $4.65 billion, a 20% increase from last year.
