Qdoba Received Jalapeños Linked to Salmonella Outbreak, FDA Says
By Kelly Cloonan
The Food and Drug Administration said Qdoba also received product from the distributor linked to a multistate salmonella outbreak tied to jalapeños.
The San Diego, Calif., company said Wednesday it has removed jalapeños from all of its locations out of an abundance of caution, and is cooperating with public health authorities.
In an update to its website, the FDA said it is investigating cases of salmonella javiana infections linked to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to distributors, restaurants and food service companies, including Mexican-style restaurants in the U.S. including Chipotle and Qdoba.
Chipotle and Qdoba both received product that was imported by Coast Citrus Distributors from Sinaloa, the FDA said.
Chipotle disclosed the investigation earlier. The company said it pulled the contaminated jalapeños from its restaurants and replaced them with product from different growers.
Given the chains' actions to remove product from their locations, the FDA said it doesn't consider there to be a current ongoing risk from Chipotle and Qdoba's establishments to consumers in this outbreak.
The FDA said the outbreak has affected a reported 345 people across multiple states, and 93% reported eating at a Mexican-style restaurant before their illness including Chipotle and Qdoba with meal dates ranging from June 14 to July 14.
