KKR Buys Minority Stake in Malaysia's Avisena Healthcare

By Megan Cheah

KKR is picking up a minority stake in Malaysia's Avisena Healthcare, as the investment firm seeks to accelerate the healthcare provider's growth strategy.

The New York-based firm said Friday that the investment, made through its-managed funds, will bolster offerings at Avisena's flagship hospitals in Shah Alam, Malaysia, and building of greenfield hospitals within the country's Klang Valley.

KKR didn't disclose the financial terms of the deal. Founded in 1996, Avisena operates two private hospitals in Malaysia.

The country's private healthcare market "is experiencing growing demand, with capacity growth lagging demand in key urban areas," KKR said.

Deal activity in Asia's medical-services sector has been robust recently, spurred by growing patient volumes and healthcare spending. An expanding middle class and urbanization are creating investment opportunities within the region's burgeoning hospital and specialty-care assets.

KKR has invested more than $20 billion into the global healthcare industry since 2004. Its Asia-Pacific portfolio includes investments in Vietnam's Medical Saigon Group and the Philippines' Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings.
