Novo Nordisk Halts Two Heart-Failure Studies Due to Lack of Efficacy
By Adria Calatayud
Novo Nordisk said it is ending two heart-failure studies early after concluding it was unlikely they would achieve the expected outcome.
The two trials evaluated Novo Nordisk's experimental cardiovascular drug ziltivekimab to see whether it could be used to treat patients with heart failure and inflammation. The decision comes after the drugmaker said in late July that the medicine didn't reduce risk of heart attack or stroke in a different study.
The decision to stop the trials early was based on a recommendation from the data-monitoring committee, a spokeswoman for the Danish pharmaceutical company said. There was a low likelihood that the studies would lead to a different outcome from the prior study that failed, she added.
Endpoints News first reported the news.
A fourth study that looks at ziltivekimab in an acute setting following a heart attack will continue as planned, with data due in the first half of next year, Novo Nordisk said.
