IBM, NASA Release Open-Source AI Model Trained on Moon Data
By Elias Schisgall
International Business Machines and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration released an open-source artificial-intelligence model designed for research about the Moon.
The open-source model is trained on extensive lunar observation data and is designed to "help scientists turn decades of complex, multi-instrument data into insights to support the establishment of a sustained human presence on the Moon," IBM said Thursday.
As part of developing the model, IBM and NASA constructed what they described as the first open-source dataset that unifies lunar data in a form suitable for machine learning.
The model can help scientists research lunar phenomena including ice deposits, craters, and the Moon's volcanic history, the company said.
"The NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model gives scientists a foundation to explore the Moon at scale, connecting observations across instruments, revealing patterns that are difficult to see in isolation, and providing an open platform the global research community can build on," Juan Bernabe-Moreno, director of IBM Research Europe, U.K., and Ireland, said.
