Volkswagen Recalls More Than 250K U.S. Vehicles Over Steering, Software Issues

By Kelly Cloonan

Volkswagen issued two recalls involving more than 250,000 U.S. vehicles in total relating to potential steering issues and a software error.

The automaker is recalling 208,724 of its vehicles where a bolt that attaches the steering rack to the subframe could corrode and break, which could break the steering rack housing. A broken steering rack housing can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects certain 2018 Tiguan, 2018-2019 Atlas and 2019-2021 Audi Q3 vehicles, the NHTSA said. An estimated 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.

Volkswagen also is recalling another 49,958 of certain 2025 Tiguan vehicles related to a software error that could cause the body control module system to reset.

A reset could result in the ignition switching off, leading to an engine stall or the loss of certain controls, warning lights, exterior lighting or failure of the rearview camera system, which can increase the risk of a crash, the recall report said. All of the vehicles included in the recall are estimated to have the defect.
