By Robb M. Stewart

Qualcomm agreed to buy robotics software company PickNik, furthering its drive into physical artificial intelligence and robotics.

The semiconductor company on Wednesday said the acquisition aims to strengthen efforts to foster an open robotics ecosystem by providing developers with the tools, software and frameworks needed to move from research and experimentation to prototyping, deployment and production at scale.

Financial terms for the deal weren't disclosed.

PickNik operates MoveIt, a widely adopted open-source robotics manipulation frameworks. Qualcomm said that MoveIt, in addition to remaining open-source, is expected to offer streamlined integration with its Dragonwing robotics platforms.
