Elon Musk Looks to Rapidly Scale Colossus 2's Nvidia Chip Count

By Connor Hart

Elon Musk's artificial-intelligence company, xAI, aims to more than double the count of Nvidia chips at its massive data-center campus near Memphis, Tenn., before the end of the year.

xAI has already built a massive data center in the Bluff City, which it calls the world's largest supercomputer. That facility, dubbed Colossus, houses more than 200,000 Nvidia chips and powers the technology behind the company's AI chatbot Grok.

The company is currently building out a second, even larger facility, known as Colossus 2. Musk said in a post on X that the facility currently has 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips, as well as 440,000 GB300s chips.

Another 220,000 GB300s are due to be operational next week, with an additional 220,000 expected in November. "If we get lucky, yet another 220k GB300 by late December," Musk wrote.

The expansion timeline comes as Musk races to expand computing capacity, pulling every financial lever he can to keep pace in the AI arms race.

The AI arms race is shaping up as the most expensive corporate battle of the 21st century, with the belief that the first to the finish line will dominate the market, making speed crucial, The Wall Street Journal previously reported.
