Eli Lilly's Oral GLP-1 Associated With Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease in Adults With Obesity
By Kelly Cloonan
Eli Lilly's oral GLP-1 drug Foundayo was associated with a lower predicted long-term risk of both type 2 diabetes and heart disease in adults with obesity, according to a recent analysis.
The company said Thursday that the results suggest Foundayo could help reduce long-term spending for patients and healthcare systems.
The analysis found that patients taking 5.5 milligram, 9 milligram and 17.2 milligram doses of Foundayo showed an estimated 45%, 50% and 57% reduction, respectively, in predicted type 2 diabetes risk versus placebo at 72 weeks.
Participants taking the 17.2 milligram dose of Foundayo also showed an estimated 18% reduction in predicted cardiovascular disease risk versus placebo, the company said.
The analysis was based on a Phase 3, 72-week trial comparing the three doses of Foundayo to placebo in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related medical problem.
Lilly said the results show Foundayo could help lower healthcare costs by both treating obesity and reducing the risk of its downstream consequences, like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Obesity is strongly associated with an increased risk of developing both cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, the company said.
