Strong Demand for Buy Now, Pay Later Drives Higher Volume and Improving Margins for Affirm

Like its peers, Affirm is focused on getting as many merchants as possible onto its platform, seeking to expand its reach through either direct agreements or partnerships with payment service providers. This approach has been effective, as both transaction volume and the number of merchants using Affirm saw rapid growth in fiscal 2026. While we do expect transaction volume growth to slow over time, we see a long runway for growth for Affirm and project average spending volume growth of 22.4% over the next five years, as consumer demand for buy now, pay later loans continues to see strong momentum.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

If transaction volume on the Affirm card continues to grow at such a high rate, it would reduce the firm’s reliance on any individual merchant partner and likely generate more repeat customer transactions.

Bears

As the buy now, pay later space reaches maturity, competition among providers could increase, leading to lower merchant payment rates for Affirm’s 0% financing options.

Company Profile

Founded in 2012, Affirm is a market leader in the buy now, pay later space with around $36 billion in transaction volume in fiscal 2025. Affirm offers both zero-interest financing, which is merchant-subsidized, and interest-bearing loans, which function as personal loans that are approved on a per-transaction basis. Over 70% of Affirm’s transaction volume comes from its interest-bearing loans, which also constitute the majority of its revenue. Affirm primarily operates in the United States, which accounted for more than 95% of its revenue in 2025, but it has also expanded to Canada and the United Kingdom.
