Company Report

Rockwell's Wide-Moat Automation Portfolio Is in High Demand Amid Unprecedented US Construction

We view Rockwell as North America's highest-quality pure-play automation player based on its record of success, breadth of offering, and clever strategic partnerships. It is one of the best-in-breed competitors seeking to gain a stronger foothold where technology meets traditional manufacturing, which Rockwell deems the Connected Enterprise. The firm sells equipment installed in customer factory floors and operational centers, often for multiple decades, giving Rockwell lucrative aftermarket revenue and the ability to increase its value proposition through upgrades and efficiency gains. It is common for it to overlay its hardware with software, which sends valuable live data to the customer and Rockwell.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Rockwell dominates niche industrial automation functions and has defended its position for decades, giving us confidence it can do so in the future.

Bears

Although Rockwell generates higher margins than peers, it competes against very large firms that can easily outspend it in R&D, potentially eroding its technology advantage over time.

Company Profile

With roots tracing back to the early 1900s, Rockwell Automation is the successor to Rockwell International, which spun off its avionics segment in 2001. It is a pure-play industrial automation company that operates through three segments. Its largest segment by revenue, intelligent devices, sells factory floor-level devices such as motors, drives, sensors, relays, and actuators. Its software and control segment sells visualization, simulation, and human-machine interface software and control products such as programmable controllers, computers, and operator terminals. Its smallest segment, lifecycle services, offers digital consulting, engineered-to-order services, and other outsourced services such as remote monitoring, cybersecurity, and asset and plant maintenance and optimization.
