Third Avenue

Third Avenue Parent Rating

Average

Founded in 1986, Third Avenue is a boutique asset manager rooted in the contrarian, value-oriented investing philosophy of its late founder Martin J. Whitman. The firm faced a major setback when its Focused Credit fund collapsed in late 2014, triggering years of sustained outflows and dramatically reshaping the organization. A decade later, the storied firm is better positioned under its current leadership team and earns a Parent rating upgrade to Average from Below Average.

Seasoned portfolio managers and firm veterans Matthew Fine, Jason Wolf, and Ryan Dobratz make up Third Avenue's management committee. Determined to right the ship, they have refocused around a few core strategies, adapted to a depleted asset base through select cost saving, and continue to evolve. In 2020, for example, Third Avenue expanded its real estate franchise and gained an experienced manager when it acquired an established international real estate fund. More recently, the firm launched a UCITS version of its value strategy and joined the FLX Networks platform to expand the reach of its core strategies. Although the firm has yet to garner steady inflows, assets under management have steadied in recent years. The firm's asset base stands at USD 1.5 billion, down from USD 8.0 billion before the credit fund shut down.

The eight-person investment team remains vulnerable to personnel turnover, but capacity seems adequate given the firm's focused investment approach. The latest departure, Victor Cunningham, led Third Avenue Small Cap Value from 2017 to 2024. When he left, the three management committee members replaced him on the roster.
