Amid uncertainty, here’s how to thrive.

The past year has been … well, interesting, to say the least. We’ve seen market volatility, moving interest rates, and a whole lot of uncertainty. So, how do we as financial advisors not just survive but thrive in this environment? By exceeding client expectations, of course! Here are five ways to do that.

1. Level Up Your Knowledge

We need to stay up to date to do the best job for our clients:

  • Invest in your education: Take some interesting new courses. Don’t just take any course, though. Focus on topics that will genuinely benefit your clients. Maybe it’s a deep dive into behavioral finance or learning about crypto (so you can talk clients out of it!).
  • Become an expert: Become an expert on something your clients will like. Consider becoming the go-to expert on sustainable investing, college funding, or another area of interest.
  • Share the knowledge: Don’t keep it a secret! Share your insights with your clients through newsletters, blog posts, or even short videos. It positions you as a thought leader and builds trust.

2. Embrace Technology (but Don’t Get Lost in the Process)

  • Try adding something flashy: Consider adopting a new technology that your clients will be impressed with, such as a chatbot, your own app, or a regular podcast.
  • Add something useful: Invest in technology that truly benefits your clients and your practice, like a better customer relationship management tool, user-friendly client portals, a more robust rebalancer, or maybe even artificial-intelligence-powered financial planning software.

3. Expand Your Service Offering

Adding a new service can help your clients reach their goals while further cementing your relationship:

  • Try a new technical service: One idea would be to provide year-end tax planning suggestions. (You’ll need some serious tax software and maybe even a certified public accountant on your team for this one.) You might also bring in some insurance specialists and offer a day of insurance review.
  • Share more of yourself: Consider hosting a quarterly “Ask Me Anything” Zoom meeting where clients can ask any financial question on their minds. You might offer an on-site seminar on a current topic. A face-to-face experience could be good for business!
  • Try something different: You could also sponsor an annual “Shredding Day” for clients. You pay for the shredding company to come on-site to help clients declutter their sensitive documents. It’s a unique service and a real attention-getter.

4. Focus on Communication

  • Communicate more often: Clients are increasingly nervous, so reach out more frequently, even if it’s just a quick email update when there’s a major market event or a reassuring “stay the course” message.
  • Be proactive: Don’t wait for clients to come to you with questions. Anticipate their concerns and proactively address them—especially your “nervous Nelly” clients!

5. Make It Fun!

  • Gamify client engagement: Host a friendly competition, maybe a “most creative money-saving challenge” or a “best budget savings” contest. You could even host a financial game show! Offer small prizes.
  • Encourage healthy financial habits: These creative ways give clients a sense of control and build excitement for the new year.

By implementing these strategies, we can not only survive but thrive in the new year. We can build stronger client relationships, provide exceptional service, and ultimately help our clients achieve their financial goals. Now go out there and make it happen!
