Alimentation Couche-Tard Shares Rise as 2Q Same-Store Sales Support Profit Growth

By Adriano Marchese

Alimentation Couche-Tard shares rose Tuesday after the convenience-store operator reported a higher profit in the fiscal second quarter, supported by same-store merchandise-sales growth across its global footprint.

Shares rose 5% to 74.51 Canadian dollars.

Late Monday, the Canadian retail giant posted revenue of $17.87 billion for the quarter ended Oct. 12--up 2.6% from a year earlier, but slightly below analyst forecasts of $18.01 billion. Still, the company delivered same-store merchandise-sales gains across each of its geographic regions, driven by food, packaged beverages and other nicotine products.

In Canada, same-store sales rose 5.4%, outpacing those of the U.S., where the figure climbed 1.2%. Europe and other regions saw a 0.5% increase, said the company.

Chief Executive Alex Miller told investors on a call Tuesday that U.S. performance varied widely. The Midwest business unit, which includes Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, saw same-store sales rise 5.3%, and same-store volume increase by 2.3%, he said. But these gains were offset by softer results in southern states, such as Texas and Arizona, which together account for about 23% of merchandising sales and saw a slight decline in the quarter, he said.

Net income came to $740.6 million, or 79 cents a share, compared with $708.8 million, or 75 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter.

Adjusted earnings were 78 cents a share, topping the 75 cents a share expected by analysts, according to FactSet.
