SSE Transmission Agrees $1.34 Billion Loan for Grid Upgrade Projects

By Anthony O. Goriainoff

SSE Transmission agreed a 1 billion-pound ($1.34 billion) banking facility to support four major grid upgrade projects under way in the north of Scotland.

SSEN Transmission, which is 75% owned by energy-infrastructure company SSE, said the 12-year revolving credit facility was backed by an 800 million-pound financial guarantee from the U.K.'s National Wealth Fund and a group of commercial banks.

The company said the facility was being ringfenced as a Green Loan, meaning it is legally and contractually tied to the specific infrastructure upgrades related to SSEN Transmission's projects.

The projects is set to upgrade grid capacity, improve local resilience and connect power from the places of generation to areas of demand throughout the country's grid, it said.

The company said the banking facility "demonstrates the importance of grid upgrades both in achieving the country's clean power and energy security goals, and in unlocking economic growth."
