Samsung Biologics Boosts U.S. Presence With $280 Million GSK Facility Deal
By Adriano Marchese
Samsung Biologics has agreed to buy GSK's Human Genome Sciences for $280 million, expanding the company's footprint into the U.S. market.
Samsung Biologics, a biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization, said late Sunday that through its U.S. subsidiary, Samsung Biologics America, it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of the Rockville, Maryland facility.
Human Genome Sciences is a biotechnology company focused on developing medicines based on the human genome, and its facility is located in one of the key U.S. bio-clusters. It's made up of two manufacturing plants with a combined 60,000 liters of drug substance capacity, which can support clinical and commercial production from small to large scale, Samsung Biologics said.
The strategic move secures its first U.S.-based manufacturing site, and represents a significant expansion of the company's global footprint and its commitment to the U.S. market.
Samsung Biologics plans to make additional investments to expand the site's capacity and upgrade technology to further support U.S. supply chain for critical biologic medicines.
The transaction is expected to close at the end of the first quarter of next year.
