Chubu Electric Sharply Lower After Nuclear Plant Review Disclosure
By Kosaku Narioka
Chubu Electric Power shares fell sharply, after the company said that its methodology for seismic wave simulation was different from what it reported to Japan's nuclear regulator for safety assessment.
The stock, which has posted a daily loss of more than 8% only twice in the past five years, was recently 8.4% lower at 2,235.0 yen, equivalent to $14.29, on Tuesday in Tokyo, after falling as much as 8.7% earlier.
The Japanese power company said after the stock market closed on Monday that it would set up an independent committee to investigate the causes of the issue and consider measures to prevent a recurrence.
Chubu Electric's Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant is undergoing a safety review by Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority, as the company needs regulatory approval to restart the No. 3 and No. 4 nuclear reactors at the facility in central Japan.
The company said the issue could significantly affect the review process and potentially undermine trust in the company's nuclear power business.
