Fast Retailing Posts Stronger Revenue, Profit on Uniqlo Business Growth

By Ronnie Harui

Fast Retailing reported stronger revenue and profit in its first fiscal quarter, thanks to the accelerated global growth of its Uniqlo casual clothing-store chain.

The Japanese owner of Uniqlo and other brands said Thursday that its net profit rose 12% from a year earlier to 147.45 billion yen, equivalent to $940.5 million, for the three months ended November. That beat the estimate of Y132.0 billion in a poll of analysts by Visible Alpha.

Revenue also topped expectations, rising 15% to Y1.028 trillion in the first quarter. Operating profit jumped 34% to Y210.91 billion.

The robust quarterly performance prompted Fast Retailing to raise its annual earnings guidance. For the fiscal year that began in September, it forecast net profit of Y450.00 billion on revenue of Y3.800 trillion, up from earlier projections of Y435.00 billion in net profit and Y3.750 trillion in revenue.

Fast Retailing also raised its interim and year-end dividend forecasts for the fiscal year, bringing its full-year dividend estimate to Y540 a share from Y520 a share projected previously.
