Corcept Therapeutics Shares Climb on Positive Ovarian-Cancer Trial Results
By Amira McKee
Shares of Corcept Therapeutics jumped after a trial found its investigational drug helped reduce the risk of death in patients with a treatment-resistent form of ovarian cancer.
Shares rose 14% to $41.31 in midday trading Thursday. The stock has retreated about 30% in the past year.
The commercial-stage pharmaceutical company said a combination of its relacorilant drug and nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy reduced the risk of death in trial patients with hard-to-treat ovarian cancer by 35% compared with patients treated with the chemotherapy alone. The Phase 3 trial tested relacorilant on patients with ovarian cancer resistant to platinum-containing therapy, a factor that severely limits treatment options.
Median overall survival for trial patients receiving the drug was 16 months, 4.1 months longer than patients treated with nab-paclitaxel alone, according to the company. Corcept Therapeutics said relacorilant, in combination with nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy, was well-tolerated by patients and did not increase the safety burden for patients who received it.
Relacorilant works by blocking specific glucocorticoid receptors to modulate cortisol activity in the body. The company is testing the drug for applications in multiple cortisol-related diseases, including cancer.
The Food and Drug Administration has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act, or PDUFA, target action date of July 11 for relacorilant as a treatment for patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. Corcept also submitted a marketing-authorization application to the European Medicines Agency for the same application of the drug.
