Telesat, Hanwha Systems to Collaborate on Satellite Solutions for Canada, South Korea
By Elias Schisgall
Telesat and a unit of the Hanwha Group are collaborating to build satellite connectivity solutions and user terminals for Telesat's Low Earth Orbit network.
The Ottawa company and Hanwha Systems signed a memorandum of understanding to work on the project, they said Monday. The MOU follows a letter of intent from the Canadian and South Korean governments to purchase LEO satellite communications and advanced maritime platforms.
The companies said they would collaborate on the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project and LEO communications-satellite constellation and defense-user terminals for the Korean government. Hanwha also said it would try to implement Telesat's Lightspeed services to its own weapons systems.
"This collaboration brings together complementary resources and expertise to deliver next--generation, sovereign LEO communications capabilities for Canada, South Korea, and our allied partners," Telesat President and Chief Executive Dan Goldberg said.
