Hydro One Selected to Build New Transmission Line in Northern Ontario
By Robb M. Stewart
Hydro One has been picked to develop and build a new transmission line to expand the electricity system in the Greenstone region of Ontario's far north.
The company, Ontario's largest electric utility, was designated by the provincial government to build the line to provide additional capacity in the area and improve reliability, Hydro One said Wednesday.
The proposed project is a single-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line that will be connected to the existing infrastructure and is designed to support a future second circuit. It is expected to be in service in 2032.
Hydro One said proximate First Nations communities will have an opportunity to invest in a 50% equity stake in the transmission-line component of the project.
Last November, Ontario moved to amend Hydro One transmission license to develop and construct a new transmission line between Bowmanville and the greater Toronto area in southern Ontario. That project proposes s a new double-circuit 500-kilovolt transmission line that is expected to be in service in the early 2030s.
Hydro One in November also filed an application with the Ontario Energy Board to construct a new double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line between Abitibi Consolidated Junction, within an existing Hydro One transmission corridor in Thorold and Crowland Transformer Station in Welland.
