Intact Financial's Board Approves Share Buyback Program

By Robb M. Stewart

Intact Financial's board has given the go ahead for the property and casualty insurer to buy back up to about 3% of its shares over a one-year period.

Intact on Thursday said it launched a normal course issuer bid that would allow it to buy for cancellation up to 5.3 million of its shares. Purchases would be made through open market transactions on the Toronto Stock Exchange or via other designated exchanges and alternative trading systems in Canada.

The company's shares have fallen 13% over the last year, though are up about 2.3% so far this month, last closing at C$253.55 ($186.75).

Intact bought 798,825 of its shares during the preceding 12 months under a normal course issuer bid that allowed it to buy back a maximum of 5.4 million shares.
