India's Reliance Industries to Invest $110 Billion in AI — Update

By Kosaku Narioka

Reliance Industries plans to invest $110 billion to build large-scale data centers and offer artificial-intelligence services, the latest in a string of high-profile announcements this week aimed at boosting India's standing in the global AI race.

The Indian industrial and consumer giant will invest 10 trillion rupees, equivalent to $110.13 billion, over the next seven years, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said Thursday at a global AI summit in New Delhi.

Ambani, one of India's richest and best-known executives, said the company will build gigawatt-scale data centers and aim to deliver reliable, high-quality, affordable AI services for both big businesses and ordinary consumers.

"The biggest constraint in AI today is not talent or imagination. It is scarcity and high cost of compute," he told the audience.

Reliance is building a multi-gigawatt, AI-ready data-center park in the city of Jamnagar in the western coastal state of Gujarat, with more than 120 megawatts of capacity expected to come online by the end of 2026, he said.

Ambani said the company, whose business spans sectors from petrochemicals to retail to telecom services, has an abundant supply of renewable energy available thanks to its solar projects.

He said the company will partner with the world's best technology companies to build the AI age and work with domestic business groups to adopt AI in different industries.

Reliance's announcement comes as tech executives and government leaders are visiting the South Asian nation this week for the AI summit.

Tata Consultancy Services said earlier Thursday that it is teaming up with OpenAI to offer AI services. That followed rival Infosys's announcement of its collaboration with Anthropic earlier this week.

Indian energy and logistics giant Adani Group on Tuesday said it will invest $100 billion to develop large-scale data centers by 2035.
