Eli Lilly, Incyte Get CHMP Backing for Olumiant in Adolescents With Severe Alopecia Areata
By Colin Kellaher
Eli Lilly and Incyte said a key European regulatory committee has recommended expanded approval of their Olumiant drug for adolescents with severe alopecia areata.
The companies on Friday said the recommendation from the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use covers the use of Olumiant in patients 12 and older with the autoimmune disease that causes sudden hair loss.
The European Commission, which generally follows the CHMP's advice, is expected to make a final decision in one to two months, the companies said.
Olumiant is already approved in Europe for people 18 and older with severe alopecia areata.
Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly in 2009 signed an agreement with Incyte, a Wilmington, Del., biopharmaceutical company, to develop and commercialize Olumiant for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
In addition to severe alopecia areata, Olumiant is approved in dozens of countries around the world for use in rheumatoid arthritis and atopic dermatitis.
