Heidelberg Materials Mulls Scale Down of Clinker Production in Sweden's Skovde Plant

By Nina Kienle

Heidelberg Materials said it is considering significantly scaling down clinker production at its cement plant in Skovde, Sweden.

The German building materials group said Thursday that it intends to focus activities at the Skovde plant on the end product, cement, from 2027 onward, as part of the company's streamlining efforts amid weak construction demand in Sweden.

Most of its clinker production focus will instead be concentrated at its larger cement plant in the locality of Slite on Gotland island, Heidelberg said. Clinker is an essential, intermediate ingredient in cement manufacturing.

The company said it would enter into talks with social partners regarding organizational adjustments that might occur.

Currently, around one quarter of Sweden's total cement volume is produced at Heidelberg's plant in Skovde, it added.

The step is part of Heidelberg Material's optimization of its European production network, increasingly aligning its cement portfolio toward low-carbon products, it said.
