Finnair Orders New Embraer Aircraft, Seeks Used Airbus Planes to Renew Narrowbody Fleet
By Dominic Chopping
Finnair placed a firm order with Embraer for 18 E195-E2 aircraft and will source up to 12 used Airbus A320/321ceos to replace older aircraft as it works to renew its narrowbody fleet.
The Finnish carrier said the Embraer deal also includes options on a further 16 aircraft and 12 purchase rights and it has signed a separate agreement with RTX's Pratt & Whitney for spare engines and maintenance services for the PW1900G GTF engines that power the Embraer E2.
Deliveries of the first three 134-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft are scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2027, with a further six to be delivered in 2028 and another six in 2029.
The E195-E2s will be operated by Finnair's regional partner Norra.
"The Embraer E195-E2 is a great match for our needs, enabling a stronger regional network that both strengthens connectivity to and from Finland, and efficiently feeds our long-haul network," said Finnair Chief Executive Turkka Kuusisto.
The Airbus aircraft it plans to source will replace the oldest A319s and A320s in the fleet over the next few years, it added.
"A mix of larger and smaller narrow-bodies allows us to tap into the growth opportunities in our markets in a flexible and efficient manner," Kuusisto said.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
