Travere Therapeutics Shares Rise on FDA Approval of Kidney-Disorder Drug
By Adriano Marchese
Travere Therapeutics shares surged in premarket trading after the company received regulatory approval in the U.S. for its rare kidney-disorder treatment.
Shares trading in premarket rose 37% to $42.16.
The biopharmaceutical company late Monday said it received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its Filspari drug to reduce proteinuria with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, or FSGS, without nephrotic syndrome in patients aged eight years and older.
Proteinuria is an excess buildup of protein in urine that is often a marker of kidney damage, such as FSGS, a rare kidney disease that causes scarring in parts of the kidney's filtering units. In patients with without nephrotic syndrome, FSGS is typically driven by increased stress on the glomeruli, which triggers inflammatory and fibrotic pathways that lead to progressive scarring.
The FDA approval of Filspari is the first of its kind, Travere said. Filspari is the first medicine approved to treat FSGS, it said. The treatment is currently also approved to treat IgA nephropathy, another rare kidney disease.
Travere estimates that there are over 30,000 individuals in the U.S. with FSGS without nephrotic syndrome.
