Australia Buys 400 Million Liters of Diesel Under Strategic Reserve — OPIS

The Australian government has partnered with domestic refiner Ampol to procure 100 million liters of diesel, bringing the total purchased under the Strategic Reserve bill in the last week to 400 million liters, according to a news release by the Ministry for Climate Change and Energy on Friday.

Around half will be delivered to Queensland, the location of Ampol's Lytton refinery. The delivery period was not stated.

A first shipment of 100 million liters, announced on April 16 and purchased through a partnership with Viva Energy, comprised a cargo each from Brunei and South Korea.

A second shipment of 200 million liters, announced on Wednesday, was purchased together with BP Australia and Viva Energy, but the origins were not disclosed.

Based on vessel-tracking data from Kpler, for arrivals in May, Australia expects to receive 2.85 million bbl of diesel from China, South Korea and the U.S., as OPIS reported earlier.

Australia had 2.89 billion liters of diesel held under the Minimum Stockholding Obligation as of April 14, equivalent to 31 days of normal consumption, according to an April 18 update from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

The Strategic Reserve function allows the Australian government to secure strategic materials vital to the domestic economy when global markets are volatile or supply chains are disrupted.
