Canada Approves Dr. Reddy's Generic Version of Novo Nordisk's Ozempic

By Elias Schisgall

The Canadian government authorized a generic version of Ozempic developed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, making it the first G7 country to approve a generic version of the massively popular GLP-1 diabetes treatment.

The generic semaglutide injection is modeled off of Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and is approved for once-weekly treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes.

Health Canada, the country's health-policy arm, said it is reviewing eight other submissions for generic GLP-1 treatments and expects to make regulatory decisions in the coming weeks and months.

The approval opens the door for Canadian patients to receive the treatment at lower costs than those offered by Novo Nordisk and its main GLP-1 competitor, Eli Lilly. Both companies have reaped windfalls from the rapid adoption of their diabetes and obesity treatments.

Some generic medications in Canada can be 45% to 90% cheaper than their brand name equivalents, Health Canada said.

American depositary shares of Novo Nordisk were down 3%, to $39.94, midday Wednesday. Eli Lilly was down 2.3%, to $855.13, and is expected to report its first-quarter results Thursday morning.
