Sherwin-Williams, Nippon Paint Weigh Options After Akzo Nobel Rejects Joint Bid
By Adriano Marchese
Sherwin-Williams and Nippon Paint are considering their next steps after Akzo Nobel rejected their joint proposal to acquire and split up the Dutch coatings maker.
Akzo Nobel said Wednesday it rejected a joint takeover approach from the two companies that valued it at 73 euros ($84.91) a share. Under the proposal, Nippon Paint would have launched an all-cash offer for Akzo Nobel, and then sold portions of the business to Sherwin-Williams.
Nippon Paint and Sherwin-Williams said later Wednesday that the two are considering their next steps, if any.
The two said they still believe their proposal offers strategic benefits to Akzo Nobel's businesses, noting that both the Decorative Paints and Industrial Coatings business and the Marine & Protective Coatings, Automotive & Specialty Coatings and Powder Coatings businesses would become part of broader global platforms with greater access to resources.
Nippon Paint and Sherwin-Williams said they will provide further updates as appropriate.
